New Sumter County 20mph speed limits
Hello Residents: CDD3 was briefed today about the implementation of the new speed limits in January, 2012. I thought you might wish to know how this might impact each of you.
When asked why Sumter Co. Board passed this ordnance and limited it to The Villages rather than all of Sumter County, the answer was that "due to our urban type density and the mixing of golf carts with motor vehicles" the safe way was to reduce speeds. This will make enforcement easier.
All major roads that are 35 now will remain so; all other road are 20 mph. UNLESS other wise posted. There will 16 new speed signs, there will 15 signs removed. These sign changes will be done in January.
Major changes for us: Oak Forest will go from 25 to 20; Davenport (the main road through Summerhill to Publix) will increase from 15 to 20. Carriage House @ Glenbrook will reduce to 10; Bedford Way in Belle Aire will reduce to 15.
MANY OF THESE CHANGES WILL BE EFFECTED BY MERELY REMOVING EXISTING SIGNS. i.e. on Oak Forest and Davenport, they will just remove existing signs...so that the 20 mile rule will apply.
There will be warning signs at the outside borders of the Villages as well as where Lake and Marion cease, and Sumter begins.
If you have thoughts, positive or negative, communicate them to Sumter Board of County Commissioners.
Regards, John Goetz
